As housing finance professionals, the heart of what we do is to help families find a home to call their own. Without a doubt, it is the most rewarding part of our jobs. But with medical costs the leading cause of bankruptcy, a sudden illness can put the family home in jeopardy. It’s especially hard for families with sick children.
That is why we launched the MBA Opens Doors Foundation (ODF) in October 2011, to provide mortgage and rental payment assistance to parents and guardians of critically ill or injured children. MBA provided an initial contribution of $50,000 and covers all administrative costs of the Foundation. That way, 100 percent of donations goes to families in need of assistance. With the incredible support of MBA members and their employees, Opens Doors is growing fast. The Foundation has established relationships with Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC and Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora, Colorado. Last month, we added Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, and Boston Children’s Hospital to identify further potential grant recipients. Opens Doors has so far provided housing payments for over 450 families and has raised over a million dollars.
Our expansion into new areas and relationships with new hospitals are built with the companies on the ground who are willing to step up and commit significant resources to ODF’s mission. Pulte Mortgage, whose CEO Debra Still chairs ODF, led our initial expansion into Colorado. In Massachusetts, radius financial group has just announced an ongoing commitment to donate $100 every time a residential home loan is closed, which will really help support our efforts at Boston Children’s. Dave Motley, currently MBA’s Vice Chair and a member of ODF’s Board, and President of the Fort Worth based Colonial Savings, F.A. and its divisions — Colonial National Mortgage and CU Members Mortgage, is helping us expand into Texas.
MBA just announced another exciting first – the Opens Doors Foundation was named an Official Charity Partner of the 2016 TCS New York City Marathon taking place on Sunday, November 6 this year.
